To know about CRBLP and the Internship program, please visit us at http://www.bracu.ac.bd/research/crblp/ We are always holding seminars on NLP, so those are also good opportunities to learn about the program. Of course, you can come to us in person for any query.
This is not a four credit subject like the thesis nor is it a replacement of any course. This is purely a research work and a good opportunity for you to explore and learn about the research-world of NLP.
This is not like the traditional Internship programs. As such, you will not be paid. This is completely an honorary internship post.
Detailed information about the application and selection procedure is available on the website. We maintain a rigorous policy about taking interns. Before you decide to apply, please take the time to read the Online CRBLP internship page.
The website will be updated regularly to notify students about intern-recruitment. So, keep in touch with the CRBLP website to stay informed.
- Step One: Fill up the online application form within time and submit it. Or, you can come to the research center and pick up a printed form and submit it to us in person. Either way, please keep in mind that –
- We will not accept applications after the deadline mentioned at the website – neither through online submission system nor in person.
- If you know that you will be unable to apply during the mentioned time period, please come to us and we will make special arrangements beforehand – but under no circumstances will we be recruiting you in the middle of a semester.
- If your application was not evaluated due to missing the deadline, please do not assume that the application will be queued for the next semester. To enroll for the next semester, you will have to submit again.
- We require you to choose a specific area of interest (which you can change later). If you are unsure of what to choose, you can come and talk to us.
- Step Two: After the preliminary evaluation, we will inform you about interview date and time by mail and also through the website. So, please keep in touch with us and also with your peers to know about the interview date and time.
- If you have any engagement on that particular date and time, please let us know so that we can hold the interview session some other time. Failing to do so will result in application rejection.
- Step Three: Based on your primary area of interest, you will be provided some documents. If for any reason you didn’t receive yours, please collect it from us in person. You can of course change your choice later or add / drop new ones.
For any clarification on the provided papers and what to do with them, you are always welcome. These papers are crucial for your selection, so failing to collect them and not acting on it is not an option.
- If you have any engagement on that particular date and time, please let us know so that we can hold the interview session some other time. Failing to do so will result in application rejection.
There are multiple research areas in Natural Language Processing – some are implementation based while some are more theoretical. The implementation based works will require a fairly good knowledge of one programming language (preferably Java, Python, C#). As such we will evaluate you based on (but not limited to) the following criteria:
- Knowledge about NLP: We do not expect the interns to have in depth knowledge about Natural Language Processing. However, we do expect them to know about the ongoing projects here at CRBLP and also some basic idea about his or her chosen field. For the applicants’ benefit, we will be holding seminars and workshops.
- Presentation: As mentioned earlier after you have selected a specific research area, you will be given some documents & research papers all giving you some basic idea about your topic. You will have to study the papers and give us a short presentation. We will ask you basic questions about the paper contents.
We have already mentioned that these documents and the presentation are crucial. You might not get selected if you fail to recognize the importance of the presentation. We value the time and effort you put into understanding the basics more than we value a CGPA of 4.0.
- Credits Completed: The applicant must have completed a minimum of 99 credits.
- Course Load: We will especially consider your course load in the current semester. We are looking for interns who can give a certain amount of time and effort behind his research. As such, we won’t consider you if you are taking more than 5 courses.
- CGPA: We require a minimum of 3.0 CGPA. We will especially look into the grades in the core subjects required for your chosen research area. A good grade in those subjects can be a positive factor for ensuring your selection.
- Once a student has been selected, he will be working under the supervision of one of CRBLP members who is already working on the specific topic, throughout the semester.
- The intern can of course change his research topic and he may be assigned another supervisor, provided the new supervisor is willing to take another intern. But it is advised not to change the topic after 4 weeks have passed, as it may become difficult for the intern to start working on a new topic and then complete the work within the semester.
An intern may of course work with us for more than one semester, provided he has proven that he is competent and willing to work.
- An intern will meet his supervisor regularly and give update of the work done. The supervisor will keep record of the progress of work. We encourage every intern to keep record of his workflow and turn it over to his supervisor as it will be good for both him and anyone else who decides to work on the same topic later.
- At the end of the semester, every intern must submit a detailed paper on what he has done and may be asked to do a presentation on his work. Failing to submit the paper may force a supervisor to regard the internship to be incomplete.
- On the other hand, a paper submission in no way indicates a successful completion of the internship. A supervisor has to be satisfied to recommend the intern for successful completion.
- Based on the supervisor’s recommendation, our respected teachers will evaluate the work done by the intern and will consider whether or not the intern qualifies to receive recognition of his work. If an intern is considered to be qualified, he then will receive a recommendation letter from the CRBLP Head and will be able to use CRBLP as a reference on his resume.
- All work done by the intern will be archived in the CRBLP Research Vault and will be open to anyone else who decides to work on the topic later.
- The intern may wish to continue his work further with CRBLP and apply for another semester; however whether or not he will be selected for the interview this time will depend on his previous work.
Thank you for reading this carefully. We appreciate your taking the time and look forward to work with you.
