Prevalence of Psychiatric Morbidity in an Old Home in Bangladesh: Patterns and Predictors (A Mixed Method Study)

Razia Sultana

Abstract

Psychiatric morbidity is a major health problem worldwide, affecting one in every five individuals over the age of 65. The number of older adults with psychiatric disorders is expected to double in the next 30 years. The elderly receive disproportionately little specialty mental health care. In developing countries like Bangladesh, the problem is compounded by inadequate mental health services and the lack of relevant epidemiological information. Few researchers have studied the magnitude of mental health problems among the elderly. In view of the dearth of information on the above issues the present study was undertaken in an old home in Gazipur, Bangladesh.
