Sexuality among the Men Suffering with Spinal Cord Injury: Perception and the Coping Strategies

Abstract 

India is one of the signatory with all other 180 nations to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in 1994 and agreed that sexual and reproductive health is aright for all still it is one of the country who consider sexual and reproductive rights are irrelevant for persons with disabilities for its traditional beliefs, culture and norms. Though rehabilitation programmes fulfill the endeavor in regards to education, employment to enhance their economic self reliance up to some extent, sexual needs and desire to have sex, intimacy and parent hood has remained untargeted. A common form of physical disability Spinal Cord Injury is found in a wide range globally. Though they differ from of all other form of physical disabilities still they get the rehabilitation as same. Person suffering from spinal cord injury gets a severe form of physical disability in the form of paralysis, but sexual desire always remained strong as before. Spinal cord injury affects both the individual and his partner in maintaining their mental, physical and sexual wellbeing. With having a physical incapability to perform sex the men suffering with spinal cord injury try to express their feelings and desires in various ways.
