Francis Iris Mariao
Abstract
Background
Visceral leishmaniasis occurs mainly in developing countries with an annual incidence of 600,000 cases. In Bangladesh, 29 out of the 64 districts report cases which totaled 8,920 in 2004. Mymensingh district reports the highest number of cases with 2,320 per year and the incidence has been shown to increase in its Fulbaria sub-district with 1,849 cases in 2005 and 2,030 cases in 2006. Kala-azar control is based on surveillance, early diagnosis and effective treatment, and efficacious vector control. However there is no one single known effective control package for the disease. In Bangladesh, the government and some research institutions are involved in kala-azar control.
