Sher Shah Amin
Abstract
High fertility and rapid population growth have an important impact on overall socio-economic development of the country and on mothers and children health. Reproductive health indicators are very poor in Afghanistan. As it is shown by (WHO 2000) at the country level the maternal mortality ratio is 1900 deaths per 100000 live births. Likewise, 165 children die per 1000 live birth every year before reaching their first birthday. These indicators are far worse in remotest and hard to reach areas. For example in Badakhshan one of the remote province in north-east of the country has the estimated MMR of 6500 per 100000 live births. Population growth rate is relatively high and it is increasing recently. Annual growth is 3.3% and TFR is 7.4 per woman. Twenty-eight percent of women are aware of family planning and among those only half of them practice family planning. This study was conducted in Jabalussaraj one of the rural district of Afghanistan under Parwan province. This district is located about 75km in north of Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan.
