Food adulteration in Dhaka city: Assessing temporal trends and consumers’ awareness

Abstract
Food safety is an important global public health issue and food adulteration is one of the recognized food hazards. Food adulteration includes various forms of practices such as mixing, substituting, concealing the quality of food by mislabeling, putting up decomposed or expired food for sale or consumption, and adding toxic substances. It is an age-old problem that affects people at all strata of the society. The consequences include financial loss and health hazards that can result from either addition of deleterious substances or removal of a vital component. In Bangladesh it is believed to have become rampant in recent years. The traders and manufacturers responsible for the adulteration are willfully tampering most of the foods consumed
