A proposal to prevent malnutrition in El Alto-Bolivia: "Identifying the best solutions for the community from experts within the community"

Ramiro Llanque Torrez

Abstract

Malnutrition was associated with 54% of child deaths (10.8 million children) in developing countries in 2000 (WHO, 2004). It is widely assumed that the main causes of malnutrition in children are mostly related to food availability that obeys to factors which are very complex, multidimensional, and interrelated. For the purposes of this study food availability is not the only cause. Adequate food is certainly essential for the normal growth of a young baby; but it is not enough. Good nutrition, in the early months of life, is also frequently determined by feeding and child caring practices.
