Cultural Dimensions & Socio-demographic Correlates of Depression in
Matlab, Bangladesh
Nasima Selim
Abstract
Unipolar major depression is ranked as the fourth leading cause of disability among all diseases and places an enormous burden on societies worldwide. But subjective experience of depression, its manifestations, and the social responses to it differ across countries and cultures. The World Health Organization proposes standard diagnostic terms to define depression which are commonly applied in epidemiological studies. But historically there has been a lack of trans-disciplinary investigations to contextualize depression in the socio-cultural milieu, particularly in rural Bangladesh, where depression is still an under researched topic.
