Dr. Habibullah Habib
Abstract
Tuberculosis is generally considered to be an important cause of adult mortality in Afghanistan. It causes 20,000 deaths each year. Afghanistan is one of the 22 tuberculosis high burden countries in the world, and among those Afghanistan is in 17th ranks (based on estimated number of all TB case incidences in 2004). The incidence of all TB cases is 333/100,000/year; incidence of new sputum smear positive cases is 150/100,000/year; prevalence of all TB cases 661/100,000. Afghanistan has adopted direct observation treatment strategy (DOTS) for treatment of TB in 1997, but real implementation started only in 2002. The target of NTP is to have case detection rate of 70% by 2010. Case detection rate according to 2004 data is just 19%.
