An Analysis of Risk Factors for Post-Supplementation Zinc Deficiency in Under-Three Year-Old Children

Alexander Miloff

Abstract

The mineral zinc is a nutrient essential for normal human growth, development and function. According to the WHO it is estimated one-third of the world’s population have inadequate levels of zinc and 1.4% of all deaths (0.8 million) are attributable to deficiencies of the nutrient. In recent years, zinc has become the object of considerable interest, by researchers and programs attempting to improve health through campaigns of supplementation. One of the key challenges facing zinc, and many other nutrient supplementation campaigns, is that once imbalances are corrected and supplementation ends children over time are likely to return to a deficient state.
