Dr. Harriet Nabudere
Objective
To evaluate the effect of IMCI on prevalence of underweight in children from 2 to 59 months of age in IMCI Intervention area compared to non-IMCI comparison area in Matlab Thana, Chandpur district, Bangladesh.
Methodology
This was a population based cross-sectional study design that took advantage of an on-going 7 year IMCI Multi-Country Evaluation Cohort Study here in Bangladesh that started in 2000.
The study population was 2 month to 59 month old children living in the Matlab IMCI Study area in Matlab Thana, Chandpur district, Bangladesh. The respondents were predominantly the mothers or other adult female-kin. The survey tool was a questionnaire written originally in English then translated into Bengali. Field pre-tests were done in a nearby Dhaka urban poor slum prior to actual data collection in order to develop the data collection instrument. The survey was carried out from the 5th of December to the 21st of December, 2005. The target was to visit two hundred and forty (240) households with a 2 to 59 month old child. Sample selection was done using the standard cluster sampling technique; 30 by 4 in each arm of the study. The clusters were the villages; a total of 60 villages were randomly selected, 30 villages for each arm of the study.
