Factors Affecting the Performance of BRAC Health Centers (Shushastho).

Abstract

BRAC Health Center (Shushastho) is a component of BRAC Health Program. These rural health centers were established for fulfillment of community demand to back up the community based health programs of BRAC. Since 2001, BRAC has been subsidizing the centers. Approximately 70% of costs are recovering through user fees. This is difficult to continue subsidizing the Shushasthos for years. So to achieve financial sustainability, BRAC had to close a number of low performing centers over the last five years. A low performing center is a center that cannot achieve a minimum 60% of cost recovery. Performance depends on utilization of services by more clients and performance is the key to survive. So, ‘performance’ has become a common discourse of Shushastho program and performance is affected by the dynamics of a number of factors. So I thought it was a pertinent topic to explore.
