Economic and non-economic contribution of the elderly to household: Exploring effects of PHILL programme

                                             Abdus Salam Khan

Abstract

With people living longer and fewer children being born, the absolute number of older people is increasing in Bangladesh, at a much faster rate than in any European country. It is believed that the older people are weak and frail, and have nothing to contribute to the household or the society. This makes their position vulnerable in the family and society. However, a growing body of literature has highlighted their contribution, both from an economic and non-economic perspective, in various forms in different parts of the world. Unfortunately, most of their contribution/activities are not economically counted; remain invisible and not recognized properly.
