Dr. Sabina Faiz
Rashid, Professor at the James P Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, has been working in Bangladesh since 1993. She has
considerable research experience on areas of gender, reproductive and sexual
health, sexuality and rights of women, men and marginalized populations, and
access and use of private/informal sector health services in rural and urban
areas. She has worked extensively on urban slum populations and is interested in how
structural and social inequalities and culture impact on the health and vulnerability of the poor. She was trained in Australia
(Bachelors and Masters) and also has a PhD in Medical Anthropology and Public Health from the Australian National University in Canberra. Since
2009, she has been the Coordinator of the Master of Public Health program
which has had over 200 students graduate from 21 different countries. She
also leads and coordinates the Centre for Gender, Sexuality and HIV/AIDS at
the School. Since 2007, she has been a visiting Adjunct Professor at the
Berlin School of Public Health and teaches Gender and Reproductive Health at
Charite, Germany each year and in 2011, she became an Adjunct Visiting
Faculty, Professorial Lecturer in Global Health, at George Washington University, Washington DC, USA. She has worked in several research partnerships with international and national institutions and she is a member of a number of local and international organizations, seeking to
promote gender, social justice, health and sexuality rights in the country
and internationally: the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Alliance
(SRHR) and Bangladesh Health Watch (in Bangladesh) and Coalition for Bodily
and Sexual Rights (CSBR). She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Sexuality and Rights Program at Institute of Development Studies, University
of Sussex, UK. In 2006, she was awarded a Visiting Fellowship at the Asia
Research Institute, National University of Singapore, Singapore. In 2011,
she was a recipient of the Fulbright Award and spent six months as a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, New York, USA conducting research
on gender, sexual health and lives of Bangladeshi immigrants. Sabina Faiz
Rashid is committed to research, education and advocacy in the areas of Gender and Health, Reproductive and Sexual Rights, Sexuality and Rights of
marginal groups, and Urban Slum populations. She has published widely and
co-authored a book on birthing practices.
