Mirza Altaf Hossain obtained M.Sc Ag.Econ from BAU and Master of Professional Studies in Food and Nutrition Planning (MPS-FNP) from UPLB on NUFIC scholarship.
He started his carrier in March 1974 and worked for BWDB and three NGOs at different capacities until October 1980.
He joined the MOA in 1980 and worked for BIRTAN as Director from December 1992 and Executive Director for BAN-HRDB from January 2001 to November 2007. He worked as Member, STC, BINP/NNP from1995-2007. He was involved in formulating several policies related to food and nutrition. Mr. Altaf initiated separate organization under the Government and promoted food based nutrition approach in the country and worked as Project Director for four projects funded by the GOB and Donors.
He worked as country focal point and member of the governing body of the Regional network on Food and Nutrition Planning from 1998-2007, as member of the Asia Pacific Network on Food and Nutrition (ANFN), FAO from 1994 to 2007. He developed National Food Basket for 2007-2012 and incorporated nutrition in the macro planning, course curriculum of the school and Agriculture Training Institute.
In recognition of his contribution, he was given National Nutrition Award, 1997 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, and Regional Nutrition Award, 1998, by the Chancellor, University of the Philippines.
Mr.Altaf worked with FAO, HKI and GOB/DANIDA funded project as National Consultant/Team leader from December 2007 to19 June 2010.
He has written numerous journal articles, ToT manuals on Integrated Nutrition and Food Based Nutrition, Nutritive value and diversified use of fruits and vegetables. He was elected as President, Bangladesh Society in the Philippines and President, FNP Alumni Association in Bangladesh.
Mr.Altaf joined the BRACU as Adviser on June 2010 for FSNSP and also currently involved as Member of the National Nutrition Council headed by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Member of the Governing body of BAN-HRDB headed by the Agriculture Minister, Member of the Expert Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Member of the Executive Committee of the Bureau of Socio Economic Research and Training, BAU.
