The BRAC School of Public Health won a competitive grant for capacity building from the European Commission (EC), Brussels, under its EU Asia Link programme. The grant of 749,000 Euro will support some existing activities of the School with its European and Asian partner universities and it will initiate new activities.

Preparatory Workshop

The main purpose of EU ASIA Link project - Building Partnership for Better Health- is to promote public health education, and to develop and strengthen the capacity of Asian and European partners to deliver relevant public health education in low income countries and to produce trained public health professionals. The School hosted a preparatory workshop in Rajendrapur from January 21-23, 2008 as the first activity for the EU ASIA LINK Programme. Partner institutions, including the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (India), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK), Karolinska Institiutet (Sweden), and the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), participated in the two day workshop followed by a field trip to BRAC's microfinance, education, legal, and health projects in Manikgunj. The partners also met with the MPH students in Savar to learn about their experience in the School and thoughts on the dynamics between students coming from different academic trainings.

Other activities that are planned for this three year project include the development of a communication strategy; European faculty teaching at BSPH; junior faculty from Asian partner institutes participating in European PhD training; the promotion of South-South and North-South collaboration through exchange of teachers in specific subjects; building resources, expanding libraries, journals and internet connectivity; developing distance learning in selected subjects; monitoring and evaluating activities through workshops; video conferences; and reports. Robin Heffernan, Research Associate of the James P Grant School of Public Health organized the workshop and coordinates the EU grant at the School.
